saturday 1 – we’re coming back on train from Regensburg and get talking with musician/hobo who was free-riding from freising to munich and mentioned to check out: maria schneider’s work as someone who is original and whose music can transform/transport you.
tuesday 4 – thinking abuot going out for a meal on friday, couple of ideas:

My Morning Jacket – from Kentucky – new album of same name but also check The Waterfall from 2015 and 2020, plus Evil Urges from 2008 and Circuital, 2011.
reading an article in the Graun by Bernie Sanders and this quote from Classic300SL
‘… writer Gore Vidal’s comment when he stated “The United States has only one political party – The Property Party – and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat.” And that sad fact will be its demise.’
and some other notable comments:

thursday 6 – going through some more collected papers and this quite from the book “friendship of women” which katie had been studying seems relevant to today’s uk and us populism and fakery:
‘Cicero, the great Roman orator, wrote his classic essay “On Friendship” not as a tribute to personal affection but as a final attempt to save the failing republic of Rome from encroaching monarchy and dictatorship by reviving democratic networks that rested on shared ideals, on personal relationships.’
before that quote:
‘Plato and Aristotle and the schools of philosophy which followed assumed friendship to be hte higher acts of the human soul, friends were the glue of the nation … allies, associations, loyalties, and colaborations on which rested the decisions of the state.’
friday 7 – go for meal at Rotibrass was nice the four of us in the far corner with tea-marinated roast chicken and craft ales – basically small, expensive bottle of beer!
we walk back through the cold and snow – the upcoming area is being force-gentrified, though still looking rough at the edges
sunday 9 – fixed the scanning issue and able to take notes on latest issue from this:
https://www.die-kunst-zu-leben.de/aktuelle-ausgaben/
nice quote at editorial, actress marianne sägebrecht:
“Die Länge des Lebens kann man nicht bestimmen, aber für die Breite und Tiefe müssen wir schon noch Verantwortung übernehmen.”

tuesday 11 – book to read perhaps “Sad Little Men”, the writer Richard Beard’s eloquent book about private schools and the kind of leaders they produce. From an article by John Harris:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/dec/12/boris-johnson-crisis-contempt-covid-levelling-up
saturday 15 – go to Gans am Wasser for mini-concert at 2pm with Oak Hill Road, two guitarists/harmonisers – they did at least two covers of Gillian Welch – am just listening to “Look at Miss Ohio” from Soul Journey and am pretty sure they did “Make me a pallet on your floor” .
Earlier they did the more obviously known one which took a while to find “The Red Clay Halo” from Time (The Revelator)
we listened to this interesting broadcast together:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0bh8tdz
and the interview gary neville with his views:
PM didn’t save football super league, he just jumped on the bandwagon
we don’t need a campaign phrase like “levelling up” – we just need to do it
we have a government of absolute bluffers – eg. hancock’s view on calling out footballers to do more at the start of the pandemic – plus the culture war around taking the knee at the euros
his intense patrotism and love of the british charaaceter and its “normal” people, with the view that the pm doesn’t represent any of those people
hates politcs for politics sake, loves teams and hates division (see two points back), plus behind the scenes manuevring
loudly speaking out because of the above and would have stayed passive but for this current regime and its standards and lack of morals and integrity
sunday 16, bonn – katie playing in the service then left to get on the train to bonn and listening to a suggestion from nick

Marcus Aurelius
Angelika: Your Vision determines your reality 😉

thursday 20, bonn – had breakfast at hotel, more testing and again earlier finish and eating at best place so far:
ristorante-forissimo.de
although pretty expensive for simple agnolotti pasta and früh
friday 21, bonn – wake up 5:40am and start reading the graun for 40 minutes or so before getting up – bad move as wasting time, saw this article links back to the discussion on tuesday, with the quote:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/21/i-was-pretending-to-be-a-hedonist-but-i-was-actually-the-opposite
Kurt Vonnegut: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”

saturday 29 – quote from RedSperenza in the Guardian about a podcast:
“… in which the economist David McWilliams argued that Britain is in danger of turning into a 21st century north Atlantic Argentina – a country with huge potential going into a long-term spiral of decline as a result of bad choices, populism, insular nationalism, and corruption. He has a point.
Corruption in government is not just an issue of ethics. It can destroy a country.”

sunday 30 – led service with katie playing
we go to gans-am-wasser and watch a johnny cash tribute group
this summary quote about the shenanigans re-lockdown parties at number 10 from andrew rawnsley in the observer:
‘This is not about “a piece of cake”. It is about whether the prime minister and his staff broke the lockdown rules that they imposed on the rest of the country and then lied about it.’
taken from this article and the interesting comment from ScienceThink:
watching countryfile and pete’s part of devon was showing with some interesting features on the clinton devon estate and organic dairy and arable tenant farms, the pebble? heath area, the interesting birds like dartmoor warbler, nightjar and sill buntings, plus the river otter shaped by beavers! they showed the lower otter estuary flooding project and how the cricket ground is being moved off up to higher ground, i hope the house is up there too!
monday 31 – oh dear still losing my power to focus on partygate, but some nice quotes from leeabroad
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ― Margaret Mead
“Never depend upon institutions or government to solve any problem. All social movements are founded by, guided by, motivated and seen through by the passion of individuals. ” ― Margaret Mead
this after listening to the parliament live feed with statement and questioning of the PM, concluding that the uk is run by a clever, deceitful, scheming leader hellbent on staying in power, to hell with any opposition, and scorch the earth they stand upon.
