From an internal presentation about creativity and team work, 09.11.2017

for creative work which involves an expensive execution
have an idea develop a plan : revisit both phases of ideas/planning until have great plan before execution

trying out untried ideas, especially ones which are more likely to result in a successful execute

creative process – liked making stuff originally, then were making CD/vinyl or reel of film, say around 1995

now, all stuff is making 1’s and 0’s, from say 2005

hit upon idea of videos for songs during the long drives between cities whilst on tour – this generated more stuff

when on TV first time, led to boy band dance, since program wanted only lip sync, then used as signature later to stand out at a festival in the uk with 75 other bands

videos are often based on work by Rube Goldberg:

slightly related of course, to Heath Robinson:

when sharing ideas, tries to imagine the responses of others is as instructive as the actual responses of others

rarely put out sub-standard or good enough work
ones which are not successful, are not out, still works in progress

if deadline coming – good or not good enough – what do they do?
will work thru the night to get it completed to the standard required – try and see the moment of whether an idea will be right, earlier with their experience

got into videos via backyard dance video, then did a treadmill video, found they were good music videos, this was 10 years or more ago – to now that they are known for their videos and collaborating with the brand who is paying for the work

how to move fwd when they disagree how do they move forward?
a lot happens in early end of the process, when there is most time to discuss
done for so long that they have learned to understand one another
if one feels strongly, has to be heard by everyone else

take concept of best idea wins, rather than getting into a fight over egos – ie. remove the personal element

high degree of trust and emergency brake if anyone is really against something

none of songs are written with a video in mind, but that doesn’t mean that a lot of video ideas are waiting for the right song

often dealing with huge egos outside the band, helps that they know one another well that they can take their egos out of it

getting folks engaged and involved is the biggest challenge but also the thrill when it happens, encouraging input

key words:
curiosity
commitment
hard-work
trust
