About

ie. listening clubs with ultra hi-fi equipment

thought for the day with john bell about listening intently to poems, eg. jeremy irons reading t.s.eliot. poetry slows us down, likes to play with the images which they suggest, eg. the psalms. decided to read poetry slowly, every day. life was meant to be deep, not shallow

had to work half a day today

went to bauhaus for a second time this week

wednesday 4 – reading about the skipton triathlon, which is being organised by CDC now:
http://www.cravendc.gov.uk/skiptontriathlon2017
https://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/startlist/skipton-triathlon_7379

going through old ACM periodicals clearing out, came across:
“Dreams of perfection, for a scientist, mean avenues for exploration,” Robin Milner
taken from an article about him in June 2010 ACM Communications: Robin Milner, the elegant pragmatist

went to bauhaus for the hat-trick and finally found the osmo wisch-fix in the maler/farbe section, where couple of people had said it said!

watching the last but one episode of downton abbey with eve and kats

thursday 5 – clearing out upstairs and downstairs

we finish the last episode of downton abbey, the last two have been particularly insightful and moving, everyone pairing up and discussing the important things in life

friday 6, feiertag – productive day taking the christmas tree and decorations down and spend the rest of it moving furniture from eve’s old bedroom, the new “snug” into her new bedroom, the old living room

takes a mammoth effort to get the wardrobe out and end up having to remove one of the book cases so that it clears the door and can be positioned to turn

thereafter things go fairly smoothly, bookcase then piano go in quite easily with the bookcase out

saturday 7 – spend morning doing a couple of financial jobs downstairs

dear phil – have a wonder-filled year full of the great and small adventures of everyday life.

spend most of the afternoon at ikea all together, lovely image on the bus of the girls and the ikea sign in the bakground

sunday 8 – band did couple of good songs in service:
hope of deliverance, graham doing the paul macartney song which reached #1 in germany and austria in 93
blessed be your name, papa doing the hillsong variant

using the behringer 1204 which fabian has “donated”

going through some old periodicals and come across some references I would need to chase up:

scarlett thomas – 41 v 0 – about a year of masters tennis

finished reading:
Die spinnen die Briten by Johann-Guenther Koenig and saw this book as a good follow-up, Brexit: How Britain Left Europe by Denis MacShane

monday 9 – marking out the yearly calendar on the wall:
Schulferien 2017

tuesday 10 – listening to john bell, how single people can observe what makes good parenting and how to minimise risks of physical, psychological and social problems arising – developing interests is important and the key – sitting and talking through the day over a meal each day, sharing interesting and interested conversation, finishing with:

“human interest … costs nothing but time, time which is a sign and gift of love”

made spaetzle for tea which was nice

was lovely watching the girls discussing school, teachers and exams, before knuckling down to study

wednesday 11 – up and girls get going, again late getting started at work, called john to go through finances

reading edwin’s blog about sailing analogy and the crew having to work hard and pull together, liked this quote in the comments:
“A smooth sea never made a skilful sailor”

got some boots on the off-chance for saby who didnt like them, then tried to palm them off to eve who similarly didnt like them, tom tailor as well, just cant win!

eve came back later from shopping in town with finja, helena and lissy, she bought a bomber jacket – 40 years on and fashions havent really changed, they both want to wear these jackets and doctor martens boots!

had pizzas for tea with salad

thursday 12 – thought for the day was interesting about being able to really get to the soul of someone’s beliefs and ties in with Nerina’s latest blog post about what you have faith in:
http://www.drnerinamuses.com/falling-failing-and-sleeping/

friday 13

saturday 14

sunday 15 – late flight to uk, arrive at bright street and have night using sleeping bag on mattress

monday 16 – breakfast at swales, then slow start into jobs needing to be done

drive via boyles at padiham then through to maplins for more rj45 kit, then visit mum before pizza with pete and rosalind

wednesday 18 – fill, sand and clean kitchen walls and start testing rj45 cabling back to central point under stairs
go over to see mum

thursday 19 – paint kitchen walls twice, then have to go over to pete’s from where I’m working for a couple of conference calls, go to wooly sheep for few beers

friday 20 – drive over to meet up with geoff and dave although no-one is there, dave turning up around 4pm

carry on getting rid of plasterboard from bathroom and with dave we agree it makes most sense to take it all out, so i start on that huge task till late afternoon, then go over to skipton to meet john and with josh we visit mum and have a game of chess, then john and i go for swim at the baths

staying over 2 night at herriots, skipton

saturday 21 – big breakfast at herriots, chatting with the restaurant manager, who is the daughter of the retired vicar of the parish church, then drive over to clitheroe as kitchen arrives from howdens

take one load of inert waste, ie plasterboard down to tip, then come back and carry on hammering away to get rid of rest of it, next door complains with baby wanting to sleep, so give it a break from 1pm to about 4pm and then only scratching away on the edges to get a clean edge for the plasterboard, take another load of plasterboard down to tip

finish late afternoon, then drive over to skipton to do some shopping at boyles for more filler, b&m for tea, then meet john at herriots, thereafter visiting mum and coming back

there’s a 21st party on downstairs but we are so tired it doesn’t disturb us, even though we are in the new block which is over the party venue

sunday 22 – another hearty breakfast, then say goodbye to john and fire off to clitheroe to finish work off – 2 hours on the bathroom getting it really clean and ship shape, then 2 hours on the kitchen to get the floor sparkling and clear the area for the installation work to begin

monday 23 – tired, ratty and stressed with everyone including katie; eve makes the comment at tea, as quite a revelation:
“it’s all about time, that is what causes stress, everything leads back to a shortage of time”
quite insightful really, especially as when i mention money can cause stress, katie mentions the age old “time is money” and vice versa.

route out the “all the world’s a stage” as it reminded me of that, spoken by the melancholy Jaques in Act II Scene VII from ‘As you like it’:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_the_world%27s_a_stage

tuesday 24 – eve changed her hair 3 times from straight to dutt over 5 hours, when i said goodnight and left her studying bio or chemie in bed with her white gloves on cos she had vaseline on her dry hands!

katie and i were discussing about the stop tap in the kitchen (endlessly discussing the house renovation as eve complains!) and considering this suggestion after the normal stop tap to allow easier operation:
http://surestop.co.uk/owners/about/

wednesday 25 – Saby went out to watch the play Hamlet with some friends and we discuss a little at breakfast, what it’s about and the quote “to be or not to be” spoken by Hamlet in Act III Scene I:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_be,_or_not_to_be

thursday 26 – got in touch with pete and found out his dad had died at 08:50 in the morning

margaret called at lunch time and said that john hadn’t turned up yet since last night – it transpired he had lost his key, #57 was locked up and he couldn’t get anyone to open up, the hotels were full in skipton, so they booked him at the old anchor at gargrave, he’d pottered about, checking his old place of work, then margaret had found him around lunchtime in costas, where else!

working at home again and stayed at home instead of swimming in the evening, gave chance to be upstairs and chatting with eve and sabs when she came back from drums

friday 27 – band practice, man gave names song went quite well, then going through it later, katie noticed we had the timing wrong and it should be twice as fast

saturday 28 – late start, then the usual trip to bauhaus and staples checking stuff and getting stuff

sunday 29 – taking sunday school, about empathic listening, “habe das Gefühl, ihr hört mir nicht zu” was quite interesting, when we split (einteilen) into small groups of 2 or 3 and chatted

getting cables and mic’s together with fabian for stuff for the band

surfing to research phones and a microwave with right hand opening

monday 30 – went to hallberg office, last week we are there!
left as saby was practicing her drums, i’d also done some guitar practice early as well

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/30/free-range-eggs-con-ethical

tuesday 31 – talking after evening meal the dinner table about water as a poor wetting agent and showed the experiment on a plastic lunch box lid how water’s surface tension is broken down by one drop of detergent, then we got on to the 3 types of blood cells, white, red and platelets, since eve was ill and off school, then i said about pontefract cakes (licquorice) being like red blood cells, sort of like a doughnut but not, then eve mentioned the mistakes made when younger with language and some examples:
lickawish, orange squid, disturving etc
